RoleAR/VR Unity Developer

TenureAugust 2021 - February 2022

In 2021, I joined Lucid Dream as an AR/VR Unity Developer for serious game development, focused on medical and healthcare industries.

I honed my skills in AR and VR development by working on client projects and internal studio projects, including Healthy Holidays, which I spearheaded and led for a five-week development cycle.

Engine/Tools:

Unity2D/3D | Perforce | Trello | Meta Quest II | HTC VIVE

Client Work Contributions

Core Ownerships

Area of Focus:  improving XR interaction mechanics, QA checks, and screen-capturing XR and web experiences.

  • Implemented new XR interaction mechanics and fixed several bugs for existing training experiences for Meta Quest using Unity and C#.

  • Collaborated with programmer and technical artist to improve existing proprietary tools in Unity for better testing and work efficiency.

  • Worked on innovative mechanics for training simulations, providing a compelling experience for users.

  • Assisted in QA by playtesting newly implemented features and providing bug notes in the Excel database for the programming team to review.

  • Screen-captured and recorded several client work sessions for co-founders to present at public events.

Healthy Holidays

Healthy Holidays is a micro memory game that teaches users the importance of staying safe.

The goal was to raise health awareness during the 2021 holiday season due to the rise of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The core loop of the game was a matching game that involved players needing to memorize a sequence of orbs to respond to.

Core Ownerships

  • Spearheaded and broke down tasks and requirements with an artist for a five-week development cycle.

  • Scripted the logic for timed sequencing orbs to be called in a specific order for players to memorize and repeat.

  • Developed an orb class in C# to allow the artist to implement sound, VFX, animations, background color change, etc without digging into the scripts.

  • Implemented a game manager to establish the game loop along with tracking win and loss states.

Error Messages for Moblie Users

I ensured the game was optimized so that players could enjoy the experience on their mobile devices

Using HTML, Sublime Text, and JavaScript, I added message errors along with this graphic to alert players to turn their phones sideways since it loads the game with the proper presentation.

Retrospect

Lucid Dream VR was my first real game development job, and since this was a small team, it taught me a lot. I learned to take on whatever was needed, rely on my team for guidance, and stay cool under pressure. It gave me the confidence to handle bigger challenges moving forward. Most of my highlights there included:

  • Contributed across multiple projects and supported areas like QA and video capture.

  • Managed large workflows and stayed adaptable, even under tight deadlines.

  • Learned the value of clear communication and embracing all tasks, big or small.

This role wasn't what I envisioned it to be, but the experience helped set the foundation for me as a team-focused game designer who’s always ready to learn and help other developers on my team.
